Setting the tripwire

Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, the commander of the US Army in Europe, recently visited Kiev, where he promised that a small number of army trainers would deploy in Ukraine shortly. He also visited troops from the US 2nd Cavalry regiment who are currently conducting exercises in Latvia. Stars and Stripes recently published an interview with Hodges in which he announced that the United States is making preparations to pre-position equipment, including armour, other vehicles and logistical support material, in Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Romania and Bulgaria. Some of the equipment will be stored in Germany.

Their lives and history are what makes our goal firm… let us light the fire of ambition in our hearts on this holy day,’ said Prabhakaran, the ruthless terrorist leader of the Liberation Tigers of the Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in Sri Lanka. Such words were the content of his Heroes Day speech on 27 November, 2001. Eight years later, the incumbent Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa defeated Prabhakaran’s deadly military machine. This military defeat saw the decline of the idea of regional autonomy, or the Tamil Eelam, – a win previously deemed impossible.
